Breastfeeding a Premature or NICU Baby

Having a premature baby or a baby who needs NICU care can feel overwhelming and different than the feeding experience you may have imagined. What doesn’t change is the value of your breast milk for your baby’s health, immunity, and growth. Even if your baby cannot nurse right away, pumping early and often makes a big difference. Starting within the first couple of hours after delivery is ideal.

Kangaroo care, or skin-to-skin holding, is an important step in supporting both bonding and milk supply. Many babies begin with tube feedings or bottles before transitioning to the breast, and that is a normal pathway. Every baby’s timeline looks different. Our IBCLCs at Thrive Lactation Center have NICU experience and are here to guide you through this journey, supporting you in both the practical steps of feeding and the emotional ups and downs that come with the NICU experience.
